This Foreo Luna Mini review is long overdue but I thought it best to use it for several months before doing a review. I have been using it for almost five months now and I’m happy to say that I love it and recommend it. Do you NEED this skin care device? Obviously not. But if you are looking for something to cleanse your skin on a deeper level than simply using your hands, you should definitely consider getting the Foreo Luna.
Foreo Luna vs Clarisonic
Although the Clarisonic was all the rage, I looked at it as an instrument of torture because of my sensitive skin! However many people love the Clarisonic and its exfoliation abilities are probably second to none because it uses a brush. I just needed something gentler which is why I immediately gravitated towards the Foreo Luna.
Whether you choose a Foreo Luna or Clarisonic or even use both, it’s just a matter of preference. Both are great skin care devices and while the Clarisonic may be more effective, it just was not suitable for my sensitive skin. So if you have sensitive or even normal skin, the Luna may be what you need.
Another difference is that although both are expensive, you only need to make a one time payment for the Foreo Luna whereas you will have to purchase new brush heads for the Clarisonic.
The Clarisonic brush head can become a breeding ground for bacteria and other harmful microorganisms after a while which is another reason that you need to replace the brush head frequently and while necessary, this can get expensive.
This is not an issue with the Foreo Luna because it is made of silicone so no bacteria can fester. Soap and water is all you need to get it clean.
It also takes months after initially charging the Foreo Luna before you need to charge it again.
The LUNA™ mini marks a revolution in facial cleansing, combining FOREO’s groundbreaking T-Sonic™ pulsations with an innovative silicone brush design for a deeper and gentler clean. When channeled through smooth, silicone touch-points, T-Sonic™ pulsations remove blemish-causing impurities significantly more effectively than washing by hand, leaving skin clearer and brighter. Deep cleansing unblocks pores and reduces their appearance, refining and smoothing your skin’s texture.
The LUNA™ mini’s three-zone brush is suitable for all skin types, with thicker touch-points on the reverse side designed to deeply cleanse oilier skin, particularly on the T-zone. The thinner touch-points gently channel pulsations and are best used for sensitive or dry skin. This powerful device gently removes dead skin cells, and unclogs pores of dirt, oil, and makeup residue. It enhances the absorption of skincare products and delivers visibly brighter, more radiant skin.
Regular size or mini?
The Foreo Luna comes in many colors (purple is my favorite color so I chose that) and in addition to the regular size, it comes in a mini which I got.
I unfortunately listened to someone who said that it doesn’t matter whether you choose a mini or the regular size because they do the same thing but this is not true. Unlike the mini, the regular size has another side that is used for anti-aging purposes to enable various anti-aging products you use to penetrate to a deeper level.
So if anti-aging is a concern for you as it is for me, you may need to get the regular size and not the mini. If anti-aging is not a concern (although the earlier you start, the better), the mini is just fine.
In addition, although I chose purple, different colors have different purposes (regular size) so this is something to keep in mind when selecting a Foreo Luna and not just go for your favorite color.
I do like the mini because it fits perfectly in the palm of my hand and I have only dropped it once in the five months that I have owned it.
The Foreo Luna mini that I bought came in a clear plastic case that included the device, a USB charging cord (to use on your laptop to charge), a brief user manual (you should download the full manual at www.foreo.com), a visual guide on how to use this skin care device as well as an authenticity card which you use to register your warranty at www.foreo.com which I did.
The Foreo Luna mini’s dual brush surfaces are divided into 3 distinct zones. One side of the device has a series of thinner touch points for gentle cleansing of normal or sensitive skin, with thicker touch points grouped at the top of the brush for precision cleansing of hard-to-reach areas. The reverse side includes only thicker touch points, channeling pulsations more directly for the deeper cleansing of oily skin.
I initially used my favorite SheaMoisture African Black Soap bar with my Foreo Luna but it already dries my skin when I just use my hands with it and when combined with this device, my skin was even drier after rinsing the soap off so I went in search of a gentle cleanser and found the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser which worked just perfectly with this device. My skin was left cleansed but not too dry.
I have started incorporating back the SheaMoisture African Black Soap bar just to get double the exfoliation of the Foreo Luna mini and the African Black soap but I mostly use the Foreo with the CeraVe cleanser.
Do keep in mind that you are not supposed to use grainy, silicone based or clay based cleansers with this Foreo Luna mini.
The visual guide on how to use this device shows how to use this to cleanse your face for a minute but I usually spent three minutes cleansing my face before rinsing. The device shuts off automatically after three minutes to prevent overuse. It does beep after a minute to alert you that it is time to rinse which I mostly ignore and keep cleansing until it shuts off automatically.
The visual guide also shows the directions in which to use this device but I simply used circular motions all over my face and that worked just fine for me.
It has two speeds – high intensity cleansing mode and low intensity cleansing mode. When you press the power button on the front, it goes into high intensity mode. When you press it again, it goes into low intensity mode and when you press it a third time, it will turn off.
One thing to remember when you first use this for the cleaning device is that while it may seem like it is not doing much from the vibrations, it really is working. The first time I used it, I spent about 2 minutes using the gentler side and felt that the vibrations were not doing much so I flipped it over to the side with the thicker bristles which is the exfoliation side and went over my face for about a minute.
After I rinsed and dried my face, my face started hurting so bad that I didn’t use this device again for a week in order to allow my face to calm down. So it does do its job even though it may not feel like it from the vibrations.
I now mainly use this on the low intensity cleansing mode and rarely use the thicker exfoliating side.
After each use, I wash it with soap and water unless I use my African Black Soap in which case I just rinse the device and set it aside to dry.
Although it is recommended to use it morning and night, I only use it once a day in the evening after removing my makeup. You must remove your makeup first before using this skin care device.
What I loved about the Foreo Luna mini
While there are many claims about this device, what I really loved about using this device was that within a month of using it, there was a significant difference in the intensity of the dark marks on my face from old blemishes.
I have tried everything including scrubs, glycolic peels, various serums and creams to speed up the healing of these dark marks but the only difference I noticed in the appearance of these dark marks was from using this Foreo Luna mini. I was truly amazed by the change especially on my right cheek which had the worst of these dark marks so this device definitely does an excellent job exfoliating the skin to help these marks fade faster.
- I love using various face masks, scrubs, peels, etc but I have found that I rarely use these skin care products after incorporating this device into my skin care regimen because my skin just doesn’t look or feel like it needs anything additional.
- It is gentle on the skin but effective.
- Don’t need to worry about it being a breeding ground for bacteria because it is made of silicone.
- Infrequent charging of the device.
- Once you register your warranty for this device, customer service is very responsive which I discovered when I had a question about this device.
- It is expensive but unlike the Clarisonic, you don’t need to make additional purchases after the initial purchase.
- I was hoping that it would help to shrink my large pores which it didn’t do although they did appear smaller after each use of this Foreo Luna mini but by the next day they had returned to their normal large size.
- Although they claim that you don’t need to charge for up to 300 uses which from my calculations using it once a day would equal almost ten months, I ended up having to charge it after three months. This is still a long time but not close to the 10 months I was expecting which was annoying. I don’t know if it had anything to do with me spending three minutes and not one minute each time I used this device, but still…
- As far as charging, I also wish it had come with a longer charging cord and that you could charge it using more than your laptop’s USB portal.
As someone who likes a deeper cleanse beyond simply using my hands, this Foreo Luna mini is perfect for me. It has taken my cleansing to another level and does an amazing job not just cleansing my face by also exfoliating it. As part of my skin care regimen, my skin is definitely looking better and better and has also helped me significantly reduce the frequency of other skin care steps for the most part such as scrubbing, using face masks, peels, etc.
I do recommend this device and because I am concerned with anti-aging, I may have to buy the more expensive regular sized Foreo Luna ($199). Is it a must in your skin care regimen? No. But for someone like me who doesn’t like using only my hands when cleansing my face, this is perfect and it is also great for sensitive skin.
Buy this Foreo Luna for $139 at www.foreo.com (8% cash back when you use ebates), at sephora (4% cash back when you use ebates), using hsn flexpay to make 4 equal monthly payments (6% cash back with ebates), and many other locations on and off-line.
