CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion AM w/ SPF 30 Review

cerave facial moisturizing lotion am with spf 30 review

I love CeraVe and I previously reviewed the hydrating cleanser from this brand here and since it’s a brand created by dermatologists, I have high expectations and so far I have been happy with the products I’ve tried from this brand. I’ve been using this Lotion for the longest (a couple of years) of the products I have from this brand and with that, here’s my CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion AM review.

I like a mix of physical blocks (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) and chemical blocks (avobenzone, oxybenzone, etc) but products that contain physical blocks tend to give you that white ghostly cast which most people including me hate. Although I loved my AMBI Even & Clear Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30 and liked how it made my skin look, it only contains chemical blocks.

I tried out other moisturizers that contained physical blocks (usually zinc oxide) but they all left that terrible looking white cast and I had almost lost hope until I found CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion AM with SPF 30.

This is actually my second bottle and when I went to buy the second one, it had the “new formula” tag on the box which concerned me but it seems to perform just the same as the first one under the old formula that I had used.

Although this is meant for normal too dry skin, it seems to work just fine on my oily/combination skin and does not leave my face greasy.

Ingredients

Active ingredients:

Homosalate 12%, Octinoxate 7.5%, Octocrylene 2%, Zinc Oxide 3.5%

Inactive ingredients:

Purified Water, Niacinamide, Behentrimonium Methosulfate and Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate and Boron Nitride, Dimethicone, Ceramide 3, Ceramide 6-II, Ceramide 1, Cholesterol, Hyaluronic Acid, Phytosphingosine, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Carbomer, Xanthan Gum.

It has a great ingredient list and the touted ingredients (ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid) are great skin ingredients especially for anti-aging and based on their position on the ingredient list, this Lotion contains a significant amount of these ingredients to make a difference.

Application

I apply this to my face and neck after cleansing in the morning and wait about ten minutes or longer before applying my makeup. It is a cream and it works fine as a makeup base although I usually apply my primer first before continuing on with my makeup but it doesn’t seem to interfere with the way my various primers look and feel.

Like all the CeraVe products I have tried, this doesn’t have a strong scent and it is easy for someone like me to not notice the scent at all after using it for a while.

I apply this lotion liberally (too much SPF is better than too little) and it leaves an almost matte finish which surprised me because this is recommended for those with dry skin.

After

No white cast

Okay, there is a tiny bit of a white cast but not like other moisturizers that contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. When I fist apply this CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion AM, I can see just a tiny bit of this white cast but it is nothing that would prevent me from going out of the house with nothing else applied to my face on top on this lotion.

Pros

  • It gives me the sun protection I need with a mix of physical and chemical blocks without an obvious white cast left behind.
  • Does not cause problems with my makeup application.
  • Did not cause breakouts or otherwise irritate my skin.
  • Great ingredient list.
  • Has a twist top that can be closed by turning it the other way after pumping out what is needed.
  • Lasts a long time despite only containing 3 fl. oz).
  • Moisturizes my face well enough.
  • It’s a little pricier than most drugstore moisturizers but it is still a relatively inexpensive skin moisturizer/sunscreen.

Cons

  • This may not be the product for you if you need more than 3.5% Zinc Oxide in a sunscreen.
  • Although the great ingredients are touted, I haven’t really noticed a change in the texture of my skin from using this Lotion but it does moisturize my skin well. But then again, it would be difficult to determine whether the protective barrier of the skin has been improved/restored which is what a lot of these ingredients are meant to help with.

Overall

This is a great moisturizer and sunscreen in one and I highly recommend this CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion AM with SPF 30 if you are looking for a great moisturizer with sunscreen. It doesn’t irritate the skin or cause breakouts. It should work for you even if you have oily skin though it is intended for those with normal and dry skin and I can use it with no problems in the heat of the summer or the cold of the winter.
