e.l.f. Illuminating Mist & Set Review

e.l.f. illuminating mist & set review

I didn’t know what to think of this e.l.f. Illuminating Mist & Set spray which was one of two new setting sprays released by e.l.f. Cosmetics. I reviewed the new e.l.f. Matte Magic Mist & Set here. Because of my oily skin, the latter was the one I wanted to try the most but because these sprays are so inexpensive, I decided to give this a go even though I don’t need any more “illumination” than I already get from my oily skin.

At first I thought that this was meant to be like the NYX Dewy Finish Setting Spray but after testing them both at the same time (each on one half of my face), they are not the same. I thought the side with the e.l.f. Illuminating Mist & Set actually looked slightly better but not by much.

Ingredients

elf illuminating setting spray

I was glad to see that unlike the e.l.f. Matte Magic Mist & Set, there is no alcohol in this.

Application

This e.l.f. Illuminating Mist & Set is meant to set makeup as well as for a refreshing touchup as needed.

As per the instructions, I sprayed it while holding it about 12 to 16 inches from my face and let it dry naturally which took about 1 to 2 minutes. I shake the bottle first before I spray.

The spray has a very light scent which doesn’t linger much and it is easy for me to not notice it much even when I first spray it on my face. The spray does produce a mist and I did not have to deal with any large droplets with this spray thank goodness. It’s not irritating when sprayed but although it comes out as a mist, a lot of product comes out which leads to a wet face.

It does have some sparkle in the spray but they are ultra fine as they stated. The first few times I used this spray I didn’t even notice the sparkles. They are very tiny and you will have to put your face very close to the mirror before you will be able to see any of them.

e.l.f. Illuminating Mist & Set Review

Since I am judging this as an “illuminating” spray, I think e.l.f. Cosmetics did a better job with the e.l.f. Illuminating Palette which gives a very subtle glow. I really didn’t notice much of an illumination with this setting spray despite the sparkles in the spray.

I know they are going for a subtle glow but I think that it is too subtle and is not noticeable at all. If you think that this spray will give you a “glow from within”, you will be disappointed. You are better off trying the e.l.f. Illuminating Palette to get this subtle but noticeable glow.

Pros

  • Does a great job of setting my makeup.
  • Prevents some makeup transfer.
  • Inexpensive.
  • No alcohol in the ingredient list.
  • Decent size at 2.02 fl. oz. like their other setting sprays.

Cons

  • I was expecting noticeable illumination or glow per the claims. You barely notice any glow to the skin when you apply this spray.
  • Though I like that it comes out as a mist, too much product is released which means that although I’ve only used it a few times, I am almost halfway through the bottle.
  • I didn’t really notice any extended makeup wearability with this setting spray on.

Overall

I really didn’t notice anything special with this e.l.f. Illumination Mist & Set spray.

Certainly no glow or illumination that was noticeable so I probably will not repurchase this setting spray. It is just a basic setting spray so if you are happy with the original e.l.f. Makeup Mist & Set which costs $1 less than this, you might as well stick to that.

I will stick with the e.l.f. Matte Magic Mist & Set despite alcohol being the second ingredient. Although it doesn’t leave my face as matte as they claim, I like how it sets my makeup. I was never much of a fan of the original e.l.f. setting spray.

So that’s my e.l.f. Illuminating Mist & Set review. It’s just a basic setting spray with nothing special to it. The glow or illumination is just too subtle to be noticeable. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it either. It was just okay
