SheaMoisture Baobab & Tea Tree Oils Low Porosity Protein Free Conditioner Review

SheaMoisture Baobab & Tea Tree Oils Low Porosity Protein Free Conditioner review

I have low-po hair which is also protein sensitive and when SheaMoisture came out with this low porosity, protein-free line recently, I couldn’t wait to try some of the products. I only got one product since I didn’t see the need for the shampoo or the leave-in detangler in this line. I got the SheaMoisture Baobab & Tea Tree Oils Low Porosity Protein Free Conditioner (w/ Spearmint Extract & Clary Sage) and this is my review of this rinse out conditioner if you’re curious about it.

Before I big-chopped recently, I only washed my hair once a week. My regimen before the big chop consisted of a pre-poo about an hour before shampooing with a cheap conditioner like VO5 to help soften my low-po hair and make it more pliable before I stepped in the shower. Then I would shampoo usually with my SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Shampoo and sometimes follow up with a rinse out conditioner or deep conditioner (this shampoo leaves my hair so soft that using a conditioner after is not really necessary unless I feel like it.)

Anyway, I couldn’t wait to use SheaMoisture Baobab & Tea Tree Oils Low Porosity Protein Free Conditioner like I said because this seemed designed for my hair needs (I also have 4c hair.)

Texture

SheaMoisture Baobab & Tea Tree Oils Low Porosity Protein Free Conditioner

While this is a thick conditioner, it is not as thick as the deep treatment masques from this brand.

Scent

SheaMoisture fragrances that are added to their products are usually strong and it’s difficult to place them and you wither love them or hate them. I thought this would smell like tea tree oil or some of the other essential oils included in this conditioner but it’s an odd scent and I’m not sure whether I hate it or not even after using up most of the conditioner.

What I do know is that this scent lingers. Even a few hours after shampooing, the scent was still strong in my hair. That I didn’t care for. If you have sensitivity to scents, I would probably avoid this line because the fragrance is strong and lingers.

Application

My most common way of applying this was after shampooing my hair and lightly blotting my hair to remove most of the water and then applying this SheaMoisture Baobab & Tea Tree Oils Low Porosity Protein Free Conditioner. I am heavy handed with conditioner so I made sure that every strand of my hair was coated with this conditioner.

The instructions are to leave this on for 3 minutes and then rinse out which is what I did.

Because of the tea tree, clary sage and spearmint essential oils, you will feel tingling on your scalp which I don’t mind and actually like. Even after rinsing out, there will also be some residual tingling for a little while. I don’t mind this either.

I also used this conditioner once as a pre-poo but wasn’t impressed with using it this way.

Results

The results from using this conditioner were a little interesting. The first time that I used this, my hair was UNBELIEVABLY SOFT! I was ready to proclaim it a Holy Grail product. I have never had this kind of softness from using any conditioner EVER! The second time was the same. For the second time, I really wanted to test it’s effectiveness for low-po hair so I didn’t pre-poo but went straight to shampoo and then applied this conditioner and my hair was still amazingly soft so it did do the job of penetrating my hair in a reasonably short time.

But then I used it again on the third straight weekend and experienced absolutely nothing! No softness at all. My hair felt dry and a little stripped. It was quite strange. I tried it again and the same thing happened, so I thought that maybe my hair had gotten used to it so I decided to take a break from using this conditioner.

After two weeks of not using it, I tried it again and my hair did feel soft again but not as soft as the first two times and I’ve since continued to go a week or two without using this conditioner and this seems to work for my hair. I just thought it was so weird how it didn’t work the third and fourth time that I used this conditioner as far as softness.

Long lasting softness?

Nope. As soon as my hair dried, there was no lingering softness to be found.

Any slip?

I didn’t notice much of slip with this conditioner which is not usually an issue for me because I usually detangle my hair after pre-pooing for at least an hour with my VO5, but if you need your conditioner to have some slip, this is not it.

The one time that I used this SheaMoisture Baobab & Tea Tree Oils Low Porosity Protein Free Conditioner as a pre-poo and left it on for an hour, unlike my VO5 after an hour, there wasn’t much slip for me to detangle with so I didn’t use this conditioner again as a pre-poo. It did work okay as a co-wash after pre-pooing with it.

Overall

I do like this SheaMoisture Baobab & Tea Tree Oils Low Porosity Protein Free Conditioner and it does make my hair soft and seems to be absorbed into my hair as long as I don’t use it on consecutive wash days. I like the stimulating effects of the essential oils which in my head means that they are promoting scalp health and these essential oils are actually great for that. There are also other great ingredients in this conditioner.

I didn’t experience any buildup with this conditioner. For these reasons I do intend to repurchase this conditioner. It’s also inexpensive and at 13 fl. oz. / 384 ml, it has lasted a long time despite me being heavy-handed with the application.

What I didn’t like was that although I didn’t hate the fragrance, it lingered for several hours and there wasn’t much of a slip to this conditioner.
