SheaMoisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Hair Masque Review

Although I’ve found my holy grail SheaMoisture hair products, I still like to try new products every now and then without going crazy though. I bit of change is good for the soul. SheaMoisture seems to release a new line every hour and once I saw this new Fruit Fusion Coconut Water line at Ulta, I had to try it but out of the selection (hair and body care products), I was only interested in the deep conditioner so here is my SheaMoisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Hair Masque review (w/ imbe oil and aloe).

My hair

4c, low porosity, fine, thin, “protein sensitive”. Besides being a new product, I wanted to try this masque because it is designed for fine to medium hair which my hair type falls into.

My hair and coconut

Let me preface this SheaMoisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Hair Masque review by stating that my hair hates coconut oil and coconut milk. Using these in the past led to severely dry hair to the point of snapping off. While most people love coconut oil, my hair is the exception. The only way I can use coconut oil for my hair is if it isn’t a main ingredient but I still rarely use it nowadays. I usually only use coconut oil on my body (and sometimes my face), for oil pulling and for eating. Not my hair. And coconut milk when cooking.

With that said, this masque per the name contains coconut fruit juice which is the second ingredient as shown in the ingredient list below but I still wanted to try it.

Ingredient list

Water, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Juice, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Cetearyl Alcohol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*, Capric/Caprylic Triglycerides, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Fragrance (Essential Oil Blend), Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Glyceryl Caprylate, Glycerin (Vegetable), Litchi Chinensis (Lychee) Fruit Extract, Hylocereus Undatus (Dragon Fruit) Fruit Extract, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Garcinia Livingstonei (African Mangosteen) Seed Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter, Hydrolyzed Rice Protein, Psidium Guajava Fruit Extract, Myrciaria Dubia Fruit Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Panthenol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Glyceryl Undecylenate, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract.

Contains no sulfates, parabens, phthalates, paraffin, propylene glycol, mineral oil, synthetic fragrance, synthetic color, DEA and is not tested on animals.

This conditioner is white and has a thick consistency. The fragrance is very light and pleasant smelling.

My experience

There are two ways to use this conditioner. The first is like a rinse out conditioner – apply it to hair and rinse out after about 5 minutes. The second way is for deeper conditioning – apply to hair, cover with a plastic cap and sit under a hooded dryer for 30 minutes and rinse or use a steamer without covering the hair with a plastic cap.

I was interested in the deeper conditioning so after shampooing my hair with my SheaMoisture JBCO shampoo, I placed a considerable amount of conditioner in my hair, covered with a plastic bag, dusted off my hooded dryer and applied medium heat for about 30 minutes. I then rinsed off my hair.

Results

Hated the results! While my hair felt a little soft, it seemed to leave a waxy film on top of my hair and while this film did not come off on my hands, I just felt like I needed to wash my hands after touching my hair. By the time I stepped out of the shower, any little softness was completely gone. I did not apply any leave-in conditioner and for the next days, my hair felt so dry to the point of brittleness. I was ready to throw this SheaMoisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Hair Masque in the trash but decided to try the other method.

So for the second time that I used this conditioner, I washed my hair with the same shampoo and applied this to my hair and left on for about 5 minutes before rinsing and this time, the results were better. My hair was slightly softer than the first time I used this conditioner (and no film) but nothing to write home about and in the next days, while my hair was dry, it was not brittle.

One thing to note when using this SheaMoisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Hair Masque is that when you apply this to the hair, it has a foamy texture, like a soap which I thought was interesting.

Pros

  • Inexpensive like most SheaMoisture products.
  • Great ingredient list like most SheaMoisture products.
  • Some softness especially when used as a five-minute conditioner.
  • Nice light fragrance.
  • Excellent detangler (I will probably only use it to detangle my hair before shampooing in order to use up the remainder).

Cons

  • The softness when using it as a five-minute deep conditioner is nothing to write home about.
  • I bought it for deeper conditioning and not five-minute conditioning but the former does not lead to soft hair and instead leaves a disgusting film on my hair and dry, brittle hair.
  • Although it is inexpensive, I am heavy-handed with conditioner and will only get about four uses out of this 12 fl oz. jar which I don’t like as the cost can add up if I had to repurchase this product.
  • Some people may not like that it is in a jar and does not have a pump.

Overall

The only thing I like this SheaMoisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Hair Masque is for its great detangling. If I were to repurchase, it would only be for this. The fragrance is also not as overpowering as many other SheaMoisture products.

Would I repurchase? I don’t know because like I said I like it for the detangling so it would make a great pre-poo conditioner but since my current pre-poo conditioner which helps me detangle (Vo5) costs less that $1, I don’t know about whether I will repurchase this SheaMoisture conditioner.

*UPDATE* Loving this masque as a pre-poo/detangler and unlike my cheap conditioner that I normally use (VO5), I don’t have to wait at least an hour for it to soak into my hair (low porosity issues!) before I detangle with it. With this masque, I can finger detangle or detangle with a comb immediately after applying this conditioner. This means that I will probably repurchase this conditioner for this purpose as long as there is a good sale going on!

Rating: 5/10

There you have it. That’s my Shea Moisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Hair Masque review. Although it did nothing special for me, it may work for you especially if your hair loves coconut. My hair doesn’t which may be one of the reasons it didn’t work so great for my hair.
