SheaMoisture Mongongo & Hemp Seed Oils High Porosity Moisture-Seal Masque Review

I don’t have high porosity hair. In fact, I’ve already reviewed the conditioner from the SM line which is designed for my low porosity hair which you can read here. But I’d heard so many good things about this deep condition even from people without high porosity hair. So here’s my SheaMoisture Mongongo & Hemp Seed Oils High Porosity Moisture-Seal Masque review.

My hair type

As mentioned earlier, I have low porosity hair. But it is also protein sensitive and of course very dry 4c natural hair.

I used this deep conditioner after shampooing my hair and towel drying to remove excess water. I followed both instructions on how to use this – first leaving it on for 5 minutes before shampooing and for a deeper treatment, leaving it on for 30+ minutes before shampooing.

No matter how long I left it on my hair, I had the same result. But first, you always have to be prepared for the fragrance when you use SheaMoisture products. Most of them including this one have a strong fragrance. If you’re sensitive to fragrance, you may have to avoid SheaMoisture product because not only is the fragrance strong but it lingers for a while. I usually don’t mind Shea Moisture fragrances though I wish they weren’t so strong and also had fragrance-free options.

The texture of this SheaMoisture Mongongo & Hemp Seed Oils High Porosity Moisture-Seal Masque is quite thick like most of their deep conditioners. I’m usually heavy-handed with conditioners and make sure to coat every single strand.

As for performance, this reminded me so much of one of the OG SheaMoisture deep conditioners, the SM Raw Shea Butter & Deep Treatment Masque because of how DRY it left my hair! Just a disaster. What’s worse is that I used my Holy Grail SheaMoisture shampoo which always leaves my hair clean and soft and this deep conditioner completely removed any softness that the shampoo had left in my hair.

It does contain some protein so I don’t know if that contributed to it leaving my hair so dry. It just really did not feel like it penetrated my hair at all. It just sat on top while sucking any softness in my hair from the shampoo out of my hair.

There is also not much slip to this conditioner so if you need conditioner with slip, this may not work for you. This is not an issue for me since I use a cheap conditioner before shampooing for detangling.

Since this didn’t do much for me as a deep conditioner, I decided to use what was left as a pre-poo/co-wash. After my hot oil treatment, I applied this on top and let it sit for at least an hour and then rinsed off in the shower. This seemed to work better this way although this could be because of the oil treatment and using this conditioner to remove only the excess oil. But my hair felt nice and soft with this method.

Overall

This SheaMoisture Mongongo & Hemp Seed Oils High Porosity Moisture-Seal Masque seems to work for some as a deep conditioner but unfortunately it was a disaster for my hair. It did work as a pre-poo/co-wash but I already have a $1 conditioner which works just fine for this so I doubt I will repurchase this conditioner just to use it as a pre-poo/cowash.

I don’t recommend it but since all hair is different, it may work for you despite not working for me. Especially if you have high porosity hair, this may be something you want to try for yourself.

Rating – 2/10

Interesting review! Shea Moisture is my fave natural hair line (so far) and most of their products work well for me, I also have 4c hair. But some of the shampoos don’t have any slip for my liking. I’m still trying to figure out this whole porosity thing. I noticed you mentioned this masque has protein and that def interests me. I wonder can it be used as a “protein treatment”. Thanks for this review!

Kendro, it does have some rice protein, soy protein and another protein which are somewhere in the middle of the ingredient list, so I would consider this a light protein treatment that you can use. If they were higher on the list it would be a more intense protein treatment. But except for a few products like this, I do love many SheaMoisture products and I have many holy grail hair, skin care and makeup products from Shea Moisture and no a lot of their hair products don’t have a lot slip but I use my cheap VO5 conditioner for detangling. Thanks for visiting and commenting.
